Current Context: The Namami Gange Project, also known as Namami Ganga Yojana or Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission project, is an ambitious project by the Union Government of India which aims to clean and protect the Ganga river in a comprehensive manner.
- Out of these projects, seven are related to reducing pollution and two are related to ghat development. The projects will be implemented in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttarakhand and Bihar.
- It covers eight states, 47 towns and 12 rivers under the project⁵. The project aims to reduce pollution, conserve and rejuvenate the river Ganga.
- According to a recent report, as of February 2022, out of 346 projects sanctioned under Namami Gange Programme, 166 projects have been completed. The remaining projects are at various stages of implementation.
- It was approved as a ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 with a budget outlay of Rs.20,000 Crore to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
