Current Context: India is hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting on April 28th in New Delhi.

  • The SCO is an intergovernmental organization established in 2001 that includes eight member states and four observer countries.
  • The Defence Ministers will discuss matters concerning regional peace and security, counter terrorism efforts and effective multilateralism.
  • India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the meeting and also hold bilateral meetings with some of his counterparts.
  • One of them is China’s Defence Minister Li Shangfu, who arrived in India on Thursday amid strained ties between the two countries over the border dispute.
