Nepal Approves India's SJVN Investment Proposal for Lower Arun Hydropower Project

Current Context: Nepal's Board of Investment, chaired by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has approved an investment proposal of 92.68 billion Nepalese rupees by India's Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) to build the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydro Project.

  • Arun River, after the 900 MW Arun-III and 695 MW Arun-IV hydroelectric projects. These three projects will generate about 2,300 MW of electricity from the river in Sankhuwasabha district.
  • Investment Board Nepal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India's state-owned NHPC Limited to develop two projects—West Seti and Seti River (SR6)—storage projects totalling 1,200 MW.
  • The Pancheshwar Multi-Purpose Project is an important offshoot of the Mahakali Treaty signed between Nepal and India in 1996 which is pending.
  • In July last year, Nepal signed an agreement with SJVN to develop the 679 MW Lower.
  • It is a run-of-the-river project planned on the Arun River (a tributary of the Koshi River), Nepal.
  • The project will be built under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model. The project is being developed by Investment Board Nepal and SJVN.
