    • Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has become the first city in India to adopt the localization of the United Nations-mandated sustainable development goals (SDG). The city will now have voluntary local reviews (VLR) to demonstrate the local government’s capacity and commitments
    • The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) celebrated Rabindra Jayanti on 12th May in collaboration with Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary University and Sanrachna Foundation in New Delhi
    • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated one of India’s biggest Skywalk bridges on May 17th. The 570-meter long and 4.2-meter wide skywalk bridge connects the Mambalam railway station and T Nagar bus terminus
    • According to a new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), plastic pollution could reduce by 80% by 2040 if countries and companies make deep policy and market shifts using existing technologies
    • United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), India’s economy is expected to grow by 5.8% in 2023 and 6.7% in 2024. The growth will be supported by resilient domestic demand
    • A team of researchers from Mizoram University and the Max Planck Institute for Biology in Tubingen, Germany discovered a new species of flying gecko in Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border. The new species has been named Gekko Mizoramensis after the state of Mizoram
  • Important Days:
    • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is observed annually on May 17 to increase global awareness of the social and economic benefits the Internet and information and communication technology (ICT) can offer. It also aims to increase awareness of methods for bridging the digital divide
    • World Hypertension Day is celebrated every year on May 17th to bring attention to the condition commonly known as high blood pressure. The theme for World Hypertension Day 2023 is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”
    • May 17 is observed as International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia around the globe. This event is conducted annually to raise awareness about LGBTQ issues. The theme for the 2023 edition of IDAHOBIT is Together Always: United in Diversity
  • Appointments:
    • The government has appointed IDBI Capital, BOB Capital and SBI Capital to manage the initial public offer (IPO) of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). IDBI Capital is the lead banker for the transaction. Separately, Saraf and Partners has been appointed as the legal adviser for the IPO
    • Raheja QBE General Insurance Company Limited has announced the appointment of Rajeev Dogra as the new Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer following regulatory approval from Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India
    • Paytm, the leading Indian fintech company, has appointed Bhavesh Gupta as its President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). With over 25 years of experience in financial services, Gupta will oversee key verticals and initiatives such as Lending, Insurance, Payments, and User Growth
    • Ludovit Odor, who is a respected, politically independent economist and a deputy governor of Slovakia’s central bank, was appointed as Slovakia’s caretaker prime minister by President Zuzana Caputova
  • Obituary:
    • Owen Davidson, an Australian tennis player who won 13 Grand Slam doubles titles, including eight with Billie Jean King, passed away on May 12 at a care center in Conroe, Texas. He was 79 years old. The cause of death was cancer. He was known for his congeniality, sportsmanship and skill at the net
    • Former Arunachal Pradesh minister Chow Tewa Mein passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife Bijeyta Namchoom, son Tseng Tsing Mein and daughter Sondita Mein
