  •  National:
    • According to RBI data, Scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) reported a robust credit growth of 15.4% in FY23 compared to 9.7% in FY22. The growth was powered by personal loans, loans to the services sector, and agriculture and allied activities
    • Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has constituted a two-member Ad-hoc Committee comprising Bhupender Singh Bajwa, IOA Executive Council Member, and former Asian and Commonwealth Games medallist shooter Suma Shirur to run the office of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)

    • A vast majority of Uzbekistan’s voters voted “Yes” to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s bid to rewrite the country’s Constitution in a referendum that promised more freedoms to the people of the former Soviet republic and could also see the President extending his rule beyond his current two-term limit
    • Odisha State Commission For Backward Classes has started conducting a survey of the other backward classes (OBCs) across Odisha on May 1st. The survey is being conducted in both online and offline mode and will continue till May 27th
    • Tamil Nadu government has released a glossary of Tamil words on climate change to expand the vocabulary on the rapidly evolving phenomenon. The glossary was launched at the Carbon Neutral Coimbatore Workshop by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Siva V Meyyanathan
    • The gross GST revenue collected in April 2023 was 1,87,035 crore which is 12% higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year. Of the gross GST revenue collected, CGST is ₹38,440 crore, SGST is 47,412 crore, IGST is 89,158 crore (including ₹34,972 crore on import of goods) and cess is 12,025 crore (including  901 crore on import of goods)
  • Sports:
    • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty become the first Indians after Dinesh Khanna to be crowned champions, after 58 years, at Badminton Asia Championships
    • Retired Commander Abhilash Tomy has become the first Indian to complete the longest endurance solo race around the world covering 30,000 miles in 236 days. He finished second in the Golden Globe Race, which is considered the world’s toughest solo sailing race.
    • Ding Liren has become China’s first men’s world chess champion after defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in a rapid-play tiebreaker after 14 first-stage games at the World Chess Championship in Kazakhstan. He succeeds Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the five-time champion who said he was “not motivated” to defend his title
    • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made history by winning the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Badminton Asia Championships. They defeated Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi 16-21, 21-17, 21-19 in the final. They became the first Indians after Dinesh Khanna to be crowned champions at the Asia badminton Championships. 
  • Appointments:
    • Debadatta Chand becoming the new Managing Director of Bank of Baroda. He is currently the Executive Director of the bank and has over 25 years of experience in the banking sector. He will take charge on or after July 1, 2023 for a period of three years
    • Rajneesh Karnatak has been appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of India for three years. He succeeds Atanu Kumar Das, whose term as CEO ended recently.
    • Shantanu Roy has been recommended as the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of BEML Limited, a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Defence. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel selected him for the position from a list of three candidates, all of whom were from BEML Limited.
    • Central government has appointed Justice S.V. Bhatti as the acting Chief Justice of Kerala with effect from April . He succeeds Justice S. Manikumar who retired on Saturday.
  • Obituary:
    • Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan was a prominent Hindu orator and scientist who passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 68. He was the founder of the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage and a former scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
  • Books:
    • ‘Collective Spirit, Concrete Action’ and was written by Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati (2017-2022). The book was released during a day-long National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat @100, held in the national capital on April 26.
    • Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, launched a book called “Reflections” in Mumbai on April 28, 2023. The author of the book is Narayanan Vaghul, a well-known banker, and it provides a detailed account of his experiences in the financial landscape of India over several decades.
