  • International:
    • The World Bank (WB) has agreed to provide a loan of 2.25 billion US dollars to Bangladesh for its five development schemes on regional trade and connectivity, disaster preparedness and environmental management

  • National:
    • The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy conducted the successful maiden test trial of ‘ADC-150’ from IL 38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa on April 27, 20231. ‘ADC-150’ is an indigenously designed and developed Air Droppable Container with 150 kg payload capacity
    • 4th edition of World Economic Forum’s (WEF) bi-annual survey report Future of Jobs Report 2023, the Indian job market is expected to expand by 22% over the next five years with top job creation from the artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data segment
    • According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region is projected to increase to 4.6% this year from 3.8% recorded in 2022. The growth will be largely led by India and China, which are expected to contribute around half of global growth this year, with the rest of Asia and Pacific contributing an additional fifth
    • Centre has requested all States and Union Territories to take appropriate action to curb outdoor advertisements of betting and gambling platforms.
    • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revealed that the daily toll collection via the FASTag system reached an all-time high of Rs 193.15 crore on April 29, with 1.16 crore transactions recorded in a single day
    • The Indian government has decided to temporarily relocate the Indian Embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan due to the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city. The situation will be assessed in light of further developments
  • Banking:
    • HDFC Bank Smart Saathi:It is a digital distribution platform that HDFC Bank has launched to connect its business correspondents (BCs) and business facilitators (BFs) with the bank’s systems. The platform will enable the agents of BCs and BFs to offer over 40 banking products and services.
    • FPIs and the banking and financial services sector: According to latest shareholding data, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) reduced their holdings in many of the private sector banks in India by almost Rs 29,921 crore in FY23 as they sold off their shares in the fourth quarter
    • UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority of India:which is a government agency that issues a 12-digit random number called Aadhaar to all residents of India. Aadhaar can be used for availing benefits, services and benefits under various government schemes and programs.
  • Sports:
    • India has surpassed Australia to become the number one Test team in the latest rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC). India currently sits at the top of the ladder with 121 points, with Australia in the second spot with 116 points
    • Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to win ATP Challenger title on European clay court when he beat Jesper de Jong in the final of the Rome Garden Open 2023. The Indian tennis star beat his Dutch opponent in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to win his first title since achieving victory in Buenos Aires in 2019
  • Awards:
    • Meera Syal, a UK-based Indian-origin actress and writer, has received the BAFTA Fellowship, which is the highest honour given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to an individual for an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film or television in Britain
  • Appointment:
    • Qantas Airways Ltd appointed its finance chief Vanessa Hudson as its new chief executive officer on May 2, making her the first woman to lead the airline. The company announced that Hudson will succeed Alan Joyce, who will retire in November
  • Books:
    • Amitabh Kant has authored a new book titled “Made In India: 75 Years of Business and Enterprise”1. The book was published by Rupa Publications on 5th March 2023
  • Important Days:
    • World Asthma Day 2023 is on May 2, the first Tuesday of May. It is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to raise awareness, care, and support for those affected by asthma. This year’s theme is “Asthma care for All” which promotes the development and implementation of effective asthma management programs in all resource countries
    • World Tuna Day is observed on May 2nd every year to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish and promote sustainable fishing practices.The theme for World Tuna Day 2023 is “Yes We Can”.
