Indian Navy & ISRO Jointly Released ‘Gaganyaan Recovery Training Plan’

Current Context: Gaganyaan Mission, India’s first human spaceflight programme, the Indian Navy and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have jointly released the Mission Gaganyaan Recovery Training Plan at the Water Survival Training Facility (WSTF) at INS Garuda, Kochi on May 26, 2023.

  • The plan outlines the training requirements for various teams involved in the recovery of the crew module after it returns from orbit. 
  • The mission is planned to be launched by the end of 2024 with four Indian astronauts on board
  • The purpose of the Gaganyaan mission is to demonstrate the capability to launch human beings (three crew members) to low earth orbit and bring them back safely to earth by landing them in either the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea
  • The mission will also enhance the capability of the country in developing technology for undertaking scientific human space exploration and help in the progress of affordable human and robotic programs to explore the solar system or beyond.
