Current Context: Rocket Lab launched the first set of NASA’s TROPICS satellites on Sunday (May 7), from its New Zealand site.

  • The TROPICS satellites are cubesats that will study the formation and progression of tropical cyclones and hurricanes with enhanced specificity.
  • They will provide hourly observations of storm intensity and precipitation structure. The TROPICS constellation will consist of four cubesats in low Earth orbit.
  • Rocket Lab will launch the other two satellites about two weeks from now.
