  • National:
    • The 12th edition of joint military exercise “Ex Ekuverin” between the Indian Army & the Maldives National Defence Force has commenced at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand from 11 to 24 June 2023.
    • On 12th June 2023, India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) successfully held the 1st Meeting of the Joint Committee (JC) of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in New Delhi, Delhi.

    • According to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) report ‘2023 Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI)- Breaking down gender biases: Shifting social norms towards gender equality‘, released on June 12, 2023, 90% of both men and women or almost 9 out of 10 men and women worldwide hold “at least one” fundamental bias against women.
    • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has launched a new scheme called ‘My Account My Name’ for its savings bank account customers. This scheme allows customers to choose any name as their account number with IOB.
    • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) allowed Mutual Funds (MFs) to invest/participate in repo transactions in securities such as Commercial Papers and Certificate of Deposits (CDs) to improve the growth of the corporate bond market.
    • Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) has launched a new deposit scheme called ‘Vikas Ashadeep 400 days’. The scheme is of a tenor of 400 days with an interest rate of 7.50 per cent for senior citizens and 7 per cent for the general public.
    • Energy transition platform Amp Energy India has secured up to USD 250 million from SMBC Bank of Japan (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation), ICG (Intermediate Capital Group), and AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank).
    • Reliance Industries was placed at 45 in the overall ranking of 2000 global corporates ahead of well-known names like Germany’s BMW Group, Switzerland’s Nestle, China’s Alibaba Group, US’s Procter and Gamble, and Japan’s Sony.
    • Hyundai India has announced that Indian cricket star and captain of IPL team Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya, will be its official ambassador for the Exter SUV. The Exter will be the Korean marque’s smallest SUV in India and will go head on with the Tata Punch.
    • India’s Azista BST Aerospace launched its first satellite, ABA First Runner (AFR), onboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-8 Mission. The satellite lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Musk’s SpaceX rideshare mission.
    • On June 12, Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, flag officer commanding-in-chief of the Eastern Naval Command, inaugurated the Naval Airfield Integrated Security System (NAISS) and the Naval Anti-Drone System (NADS) at INS Dega in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
    • The government has ruled out the possibility of capping airfares during the ongoing peak travel season amidst complaints of exorbitant ticket prices on certain sectors.
    • On June 13th, two warships of different classes were launched into the water, while the keel of a third vessel was laid at Larsen & Toubro (L&T) shipyard at Kattupalli in Chennai. All these are being built by Kolkata-based defence shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).
    • President Droupadi Murmu has greeted people on the occasion of Odisha’s agricultural festival, Raja. She took to Twitter to extend her heartfelt wishes to all the Odias on the agriculture-based festival.
    • Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced three major schemes worth over Rs 8,000 crore that would cover the modernisation of fire brigade services in all states, flood mitigation in seven major cities and prevention of landslides in 17 states.
    • The Guwahati Railway Station of Northeast Frontier Railway has been awarded ‘Eat Right Station’ certification by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) in recognition of providing high-quality, nutritious food to passengers.
  • World:
    • The remains of 95 Indigenous New Zealanders as well as artefacts and cultural treasures have been returned to New Zealand from museums and universities in Germany.
    • Meta has recently announced that it will provide researchers with a new ‘human-like’ AI image creation model that can analyze and complete unfinished parts of an image.
    • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $400 million loan to Bangladesh to advance reforms in domestic resource mobilization, improve efficiency and productivity of public spending, and help small businesses, especially women-led businesses to access low-cost innovative bank financing.
  • Sports:
    • Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy have made it to the pre-quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000 event. Sindhu defeated home favourite Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight games.
    • Lakshya Sen defeated Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the opening round of the Indonesia Open, a BWF Super 1000 event. Lakshya needed just 33 minutes to beat the 8th-seeded Malaysian 21-17, 21-13 in Jakarta.
    • Aditi Gopichand Swamy, a 16-year-old debutant compound archer from India, broke the Under 18 compound world record by scoring 711/720 during the qualification stage at the U-18 Archery World Cup in Medellin.
    • The junior Indian women’s hockey team beat South Korea 2-1 in the final to win the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 at Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture in Japan. This was the first time in history that the Indian junior team won the Women’s Junior Asia Cup.
  • Important Days:
    • International Albinism Awareness Day is observed annually on 13th June to create awareness about a genetic skin condition called Albinism, and promote the rights and regulations of Albinism on a global level.The theme for International Albinism Awareness Day 2023 is ‘Inclusion is Strength’.
  • Awards:
    • Reserve Bank of India Governor, Shaktikanta Das received the prestigious ‘Governor of the Year’ award at the Central Banking Awards 2023 on Wednesday, June 14
    • South Indian Bank (SIB) has been recognized with ‘Outstanding Digital CX – SME Loans’ at the sixth Digital CX Awards held in Singapore, making it the second international award for the bank.
  • Appointments:
    • V Anantharaman has been appointed as the new non-executive chairman of TransUnion CIBIL, India’s first credit information bureau. He replaces M V Nair, who recently completed an eleven-year tenure.
