  • National:
    • On June 26, 2023, the Union Minister of State (MoS) Krishan Pal inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) namely ‘Unnat Takniki Pradarshan Kendra (UTPRERAK)’/’Advanced Industrial Technology Demonstration Centre (AITDC)’ at the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Badarpur in New Delhi.

    • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) organised an ‘Anusandhaan Chintan Shivir’ in New Delhi on June 27, 2023, with the aim to encourage Defence R&D within the industry and academia.
    • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has broken into the World’s top 150 varsities and achieved the 149th position in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Last year, IIT Bombay was placed at the 172nd position.
    • on 27 June 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) announced a new collaboration to enhance registry and sharing of regulatory information on medical products worldwide.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eased the restrictions on onboarding new customers by HDFC Credila Financial Services.
    • According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to USD 1.3 billion or 0.2% of GDP in the January-March quarter of FY23, mainly due to moderation in the trade deficit and a robust increase in services exports
    • Executive Committee of the Central Board (ECCB) of the State Bank of India (SBI) has approved the acquisition of the entire 20% stake held by SBI Capital Markets (SBICAPS) in SBI Pension Funds.
    • Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the acquisition of TCNS Clothing Co Limited by Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL). The proposed combination involves acquisition of 51% of the expanded share capital of TCNS Cl
    • A Memorandum of Understanding between FaMe TN (Facilitating MSMEs in Tamil Nadu) and SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) was signed to attract investments worth Rs 1,510 crore to provide jobs for 7,400 people
    • Assam Rural Infrastructure and Agricultural Services (ARIAS) Society, an autonomous body under the Assam government, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Caspian Impact Investment Adviser (Caspian Equity) as an effort to strengthen rural infrastructure and foster agricultural productivity in the State
    • Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala launched the ‘Report Fish Disease’ (RFD) app at Krishi Bhavan on 28 June to enhance the farmer-based disease reporting system and improve the reporting of aquatic animal diseases in India
    • Union Minister of Coal, Mines & Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, has unveiled India’s first-ever report on “Critical Minerals for India,” identifying a list of 30 critical minerals.
    • Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India inaugurated the Indian Pavilion at the World Mining Congress 2023 in Brisbane, Australia.
    • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for ratification of the Headquarters Agreement (HQA) between Government of India (Gol) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) signed on 22nd August, 2022.
  • Economy:
    • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for sugar season 2023-24 (October - September) at Rs.315/qtl for a basic recovery rate of 10.25%.
    • India has pushed back plans to collect a 20% tax on annual overseas spending of more than 700,000 Indian rupees ($8,500) by three months to provide banks with more time to prepare their systems.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that the Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) ratio of Scheduled Commercial Banks has fallen to a 10-year low of 3.9% in March 2023 and the net non-performing assets (NNPA) ratio declined to 1%.
    • Gujarat government signed an MoU with the US-based computer storage chip maker Micron for setting up a USD 2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility at Sanand in Ahmedabad district.
  • World:
    • United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has removed India from his annual report on the impact of armed conflict on children, citing “measures taken by the government to better protect” them.
    • A new report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) highlights the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and the importance of public-private collaboration in driving its global adoption
  • Sports:
    • Carlos Alcaraz — not four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic — and Iga Swiatek were seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon. Alcaraz overtook Djokovic atop the men’s standings on Monday after winning a grass-court tune-up tournament at Queen’s Club on Sunday.
    • India beat Japan 62-18 to register their third win in the Asian Kabbadi Championship 2023 in Busan, South Korea. Sachin Tanwar went for the last raid and came back safely to end the game in India’s favour with a massive 44-point win over Japan
  • Important Days:
    • National Insurance Awareness Day is celebrated globally every June 28. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of insurance and serves as a reminder of the critical role that insurance plays in protecting individuals and families from financial setbacks.
    • World Allergy Week is an annual global event that raises awareness around allergies and their serious health implications. The week of 18 to 24 June 2023 marks World Allergy Week. The theme for 2023 is managing allergic diseases amidst climate change, and focuses on educating people about the connection between worsening allergies and climate change.
  • Appointments:
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given approval for the appointment of A P Hota as the part-time chairman of the Federal Bank Limited. The appointment is effective from June 29, 2023, till January 14, 2026.
    • Rohit Jawa has been announced as the new Managing Director and CEO of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), taking over from June 27, 20231. He is also the President of Unilever, South Asia, and a member of the Unilever Leadership Executive (ULE)
  • Awards:
    • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that its Board of Governors voted to present Academy Honorary Awards to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and editor Carol Littleton at the 14th Governors Awards on Saturday, November 18, 2023
    • President Droupadi Murmu presided over the Defence Investiture Ceremony-II at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she presented Distinguished Service Awards.
  • Obituary:
    • John B. Goodenough, the American physicist who won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on developing lithium-ion batteries, passed away on June 25, 2023 in Austin, Texas at the age of 100.
