Google Pay introduces UPI verification through Aadhaar

Current Context: Google Pay has launched a new feature that enables users to register for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) using their Aadhaar number through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

  • This eliminates the need for a debit card and makes the process easier and faster. Users who want to activate UPI through Aadhaar should have a valid phone number linked to their bank and registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
  • They can enter the first 6 digits of their Aadhaar number and complete the UPI onboarding process through OTP verification.
  • This feature is currently available for a few banks and more banks are expected to follow soon.
