- The skin bank will allow deceased donors to donate their skin within six hours of death, which will be processed and stored for three to five years and then provided to needy patients.
- The donated skin will help in treating burns, skin infections, skin cancer, skin ulcers and other wounds.
- It will also reduce the mortality rate, increase the survival rate, improve the healing outcomes, lessen the hospital stay and the overall cost of treatment for the patients.
- The head of the department of burns and plastic surgery of Safdarjung Hospital, Dr Shalabh Kumar, said that till now they had to transport skin from Southern India to treat serious patients but with a skin bank in Delhi, this will no longer be required.
