Current Context: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved two thermal power projects, each of 800 MW, to be built at the cost of Rs 18,000 crore in Obra, Sonbhadra.

  • The projects will be executed by the government with a 50:50 partnership with the central government-owned power generator NTPC.
  • The projects will be the first ever ultra super critical thermal power plants in the state, which will have state-of-the-art technology and high efficiency, with low consumption of coal, bringing down the cost of power generation. The first unit will be ready in about 50 months.
  • In addition to providing much-needed electricity, these projects will also create jobs and boost the economy of the state. The Jhansi project is expected to create around 10,000 jobs during construction and around 2,000 jobs once it is operational.
  • The projects are aimed at providing cheaper electricity to the people of the state and making Obra a power hub of the country.
