Current Context: The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi has become the first airport in the country to have four operational runways and an elevated taxiway.

  • Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the new runway and the dual-way elevated Eastern Cross Taxiway (ECT) on Friday, July 14, 2023.
  • The ECT will reduce the taxiing distance for an aircraft by seven kilometres and the time spent on the tarmac by passengers after landing and before take-off.
  • The new runway can handle wide-body aircraft including A-380 and B-777. The airport is now capable of handling more than 1700+ movements per day.
