Current Context: India and Bangladesh have recently signed a contract for the installation of computer based interlocking signalling system for Dhaka-Tongi-Joydebpur rail line at Rail Bhaban, Dhaka.

  • This is part of the India-Bangladesh Connectivity project, which aims to enhance the railway infrastructure and connectivity between the two countries. 
Some of the other projects under this initiative are:
    • The Agartala-Akhaura Railway Project, which will connect Agartala in Tripura to Akhaura in Bangladesh. This project is expected to be operational by the end of 2023 or early 2024  
    • The Dhaka-Tongi-Joydebpur Railway Project, which will modernize the signalling system of the existing rail line that connects Dhaka to Tongi and Joydebpur. This project will improve the safety, efficiency and capacity of the rail network and facilitate passenger and freight movement
    • The Khulna-Mongla Railway Project, which will construct a new rail line from Khulna to Mongla, the largest seaport in Bangladesh. This project will enhance the connectivity of Mongla port with the rest of the country and also with India, Nepal and Bhutan through transshipment facilities.
  • These projects are being funded by India through grants or concessional loans under the Line of Credit (LoC) scheme. India has extended a total of USD 10 billion worth of LoC to Bangladesh for various development projects, making it the largest recipient of Indian development assistance.
  • These projects reflect the strong bilateral ties and cooperation between India and Bangladesh in various fields, especially in railway sector.
