Current Context: The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a report produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) which measures the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. The GPI ranks 163 independent states and territories (collectively accounting for 99.7 per cent of the world’s population) according to their levels of peacefulness.
- According to the latest report, Iceland has been named the most peaceful country in the world for the 15th year in running, even as overall world peace deteriorated.
- The report also estimates that the global economic cost of violence was $14.3 trillion PPP in 2022, equivalent to 12.6 per cent of global GDP, or $1,953 per person.
- India, on the other hand, stands at 126th rank with a score of 2.553, which is slightly better than last year’s rank of 128th. The report cites factors such as ongoing conflicts, domestic violence, terrorism, political instability, and militarization as some of the reasons for India’s low peace score
