  • National:
    • Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on a two-day visit to his home state Gujarat on May 20 and 21, 2023. During his visit, he dedicated projects worth Rs 800 crore to the public and attended the inauguration of Samast Modi Samaj’s Rashtriya Mahasammelan.

    • The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has integrated the National Pension System (NPS) Statement of Transaction (SoT) with the Consolidated Account Statement (CAS).
    • Zerodha has received the final approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch its asset management business. The company is launching the asset management company in partnership with Smallcase, which was incubated within Zerodha’s in-house corporate fund Rainmatter.
    • The Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation for the year 2023 has been awarded to 140 Police personnel including 22 women police officers. This medal was constituted in 2018, with the objective to promote high professional standards of investigation of crime and recognize such Excellence in Investigation
    • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully conducted a series of drogue parachute deployment tests for the Gaganyaan mission. The tests were conducted by the ISRO team at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh
    • The Supreme Court of India has released a handbook to combat gender stereotypes in legal proceedings. The handbook contains a glossary of gender unjust terms and suggests alternative words or phrases which may be used in pleadings, orders, and judgments.
    • The Odisha government has withdrawn a controversial order issued on August 11, which told district officials that ‘deemed forests’ as a category would cease to exist under the recently amended Forest Act
    • The Union Cabinet has approved a five-year extension and expansion of the Digital India programme with an outlay of 14,903 crores. The expansion will include increasing cybersecurity awareness, re-skilling IT professionals, and supporting 1,200 startups, among other things.
    • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved seven multi-tracking projects on the Ministry of Railways with an estimated cost of around 32,500 crore. These projects are expected to add 2,339 km to the existing network of Indian Railways.
    • According to a report by Care Ratings, banks’ lending to non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) rose by 35.1% year-on-year to ₹14.2 lakh crore in June. This indicates that non-banking finance firms have decreased their reliance on international borrowings
  • Sports:
    • The new Chennai Formula Racing Circuit has been launched and is set to host India’s first-ever night street race later this year. The circuit is located around the Island Grounds in the heart of the city and will host the F4 Indian Championship and Indian Racing League on December 9-10, 2023.
    • The Indian men’s and women’s compound archery teams both made their way into the finals of the ongoing 2023 Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Paris. The women’s team comprising of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and world champion Aditi Swami defeated Great Britain 234-233 in the semi-finals.
  • Obituary:
    • Mohammed Habib, the legendary Indian football player known for his skills and memorable goal against Pele’s New York Cosmos, passed away at the age of 74. He was renowned as the maestro of the football field during the 1970s and his extraordinary skills led him to score against Pele’s New York Cosmos while donning the Mohun Bagan jersey.
  • Appointments:
    • Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar was appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan on Saturday to head a neutral political set-up to run the country until the next General Election.
    • R Doraiswamy, who was the Executive Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) at the central office in Mumbai, has been appointed as the Managing Director of LIC.
  • Awards:
    • The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has won the Gold Award under the Excellence in Government Process Reengineering for Digital Transformation Category-1 of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).
  • Important Days:
    • India marks August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to honor those who were displaced and lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. The day is also known as 'Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the event on this date in 2021.
