    • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has asked market infrastructure institutions (MIIs) to set up and operate a common Online Dispute Resolution Portal (ODR Portal). The portal will harness online conciliation and online arbitration for the resolution of disputes arising in the Indian securities markets.
    • Karnataka Bank hosted the first edition of KBL – FinOne, “A Fintech Growth Program” at the Bank’s Bull Temple Road Office in Bengaluru with participation from India’s leading FinTechs with the objective of forging collaborations to develop innovative business models, providing seamless banking experience & offering a complete product suite.
    • Justice G. Rohini-headed Commission for the sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) caste groups submitted its report on the issue to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on July 31, 2023.
    • Delhi Services Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Amit Shah on August 1, 2023. The bill seeks to replace an ordinance that mandated the creation of an authority for transfers and postings of senior officers in the Delhi government
    • The Rajya Sabha passed the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2023 on Tuesday. The Bill amends the Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act, 2002. It establishes the Co-operative Election Authority to conduct and supervise elections to the boards of multi-state co-operative societies.
    • The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2023 on August 1, 2023. The bill seeks to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, which provides for the regulation and registration of births and deaths.
  • Important Days:
    • The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), under the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), inaugurated ‘Aviation Security Culture Week’ at its headquarters in New Delhi which lasted from 31st July to 5th August 2023.The theme of the ‘Aviation Security Culture Week’ was “See it, Say it, Secure it”.
    • World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1st to August 7th. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) coordinate this global campaign to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding for infants and mothers.The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2023 is "Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!".
    • World Lung Cancer Day is observed annually on August 1st, and it has been since 2012. The goal of this day is to raise awareness about the risks, prevention, and early detection of lung cancer, while also providing support to those affected by the disease.

    • On August 1, 2023, the British government officially acknowledged that the Islamic State group committed “acts of genocide” against the Yazidi people in 2014. The UK foreign office made the announcement ahead of events to mark “the nine year anniversary of atrocities” committed by the Islamic State against the Kurdish-speaking Yazidi minority in Iraq.
    • The recently announced Indian grant of 75 crore, for development projects targeting Sri Lanka’s Malaiyaha [hill country] Tamils, will be used primarily for the education and health sectors in the island’s long-neglected tea estate region.
    • Myanmar reduced ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 33-year prison sentence by six years in a partial pardon on Tuesday, as the junta struggles to quell bloody resistance to its rule.

    • Rishi Raj’s new book “Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani” was released by Ajay Bhatt, Minister of State (MoS), Ministry of Defence (MoD) at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, Delhi. The book pays tribute to the Martyrs of Kargil War and was published by Prabhat Prakashan.The book and illustrations – “Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani” – authored by renowned writer Shri Rishi Raj, and published by Prabhat Prakashan.

    • Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand progressed to the second round of the Australia Open Super 500 badminton tournament with a straight game win over Canada’s Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu on Tuesday.
    • South Africa has qualified for the last-16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup for the first time after defeating Italy in a Group G encounter in Wellington on Wednesday. The 3-2 victory in the final group stage match was South Africa’s first win in Women’s World Cup history in its second tournament appearance.
  • Obituary:
    • Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman, who also served as Governor of Mizoram, passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, July 31, 2023. He was 96 years old.
  • Appointments:
    • Thuraiya Hamid Alhashmi, Director of International Financial Relations and Organisations Department at the UAE Ministry of Finance, has been elected as a member of the Board of Directors and a Constituency Director of BRICS’ New Development Bank (NDB).
