India and Kenya sign MoU for Shipbuilding Collaboration

Current Context: The MoU was signed on August 29, 2023, following the bilateral talks between India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence Aden Bare Duale in New Delhi.
India and Kenya sign MoU for Shipbuilding Collaboration
  • The MoU aims to enhance the capacity building and collaboration in ship design and construction between Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in India and Kenya Shipyard Limited (KSL) in Kenya.
  • The MoU is expected to boost the military industry cooperation and deepen the maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), especially on the eastern coast of Africa.
  • As a token of friendship, India also presented Kenya with 15 pairs of parachutes manufactured by Gliders India Limited for the use of Kenyan forces, and offered support to set up an advanced CT scan facility in Kenya.
  • Both sides also agreed to joint training in counter-insurgency and UN peacekeeping domains, and acknowledged the growing prowess of the Indian defence industry, including the private sector.
