Current Context: India has achieved a historic milestone in space exploration by landing the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the lunar surface on 23 August 2023. This makes India the fourth nation to perform a soft landing on the moon, after the United States, China and the former Soviet Union .

  • The Chandrayaan-3 mission is the third lunar expedition by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under its Chandrayaan programme.
  • It consists of a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan, similar to those of the Chandrayaan-2 mission. The lander and rover were carried by a propulsion module that entered lunar orbit on 5 August 2023 .
  • The landing site of Chandrayaan-3 is also remarkable, as it is closer to the moon’s south pole than any other spacecraft in history has ventured.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO and the people of India for this remarkable feat, and said that India’s human-centric approach to space exploration has been welcomed universally.
