NRL and IWAI signs MoU for export of Petroleum Cargo

Current Context: On August 24, 2023, NRL and IWAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use NW 2 and IBPR for export of petroleum products to Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries.

  • The MoU was attended by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati, Assam.
  • NRL stands for Numaligarh Refinery Limited, which is the largest refinery in Northeast India. IWAI stands for Inland Waterways Authority of India, which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
  • The MoU aims to boost India’s Act East Policy and fulfill the Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for Northeast by enabling inland waterways transportation via NW 2 and IBPR, unveiling a new chapter of EXIM trade for the Northeast region.
  • Shri Sarbananda Sonowal termed the MoU as a watershed moment for promotion of trade in the Northeast India region and a true reflection of PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to bring in transformative change in the cargo movement for the region.
  • He also said that the MoU is aimed at unlocking the full potential of Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 and empowering the Northeast India to become the engine of India’s growth story.
