Shri Nitin Gadkari launched Bharat NCAP

Current Context: The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) is a new initiative by the Government of India to improve road safety and raise the safety standards of motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes in India.

• It was launched by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, on 22nd August 2023.
• The Bharat NCAP is a voluntary programme that allows car manufacturers to offer their cars for testing as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197 .The star ratings will help potential car customers to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and make informed purchase decisions.
• The Bharat NCAP is expected to increase the demand for safer cars, encouraging the car manufacturers to comply with customer needs and global best practices.
• The Bharat NCAP is a significant step forward in the Government’s commitment to reduce road accidents and fatalities in India, which are among the highest in the world.
