  • National:
    • Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the ‘Udaan Bhawan’ and the ‘E-wallet’ facility in Delhi on 18th September 2023.The ‘Udaan Bhawan’ is an Integrated Office Complex at Delhi’s Safdarjung Airport.

    • The United Nations World Food Program (UN WFP) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) have indeed taken a significant step towards addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
    • According to a recent report by the World Bank and UNICEF, an estimated 333 million children globally – or 1 in 6 – live in extreme poverty. This means they are surviving on less than $2.15 a day.
    • The State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced a digital facility for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to effortlessly open NRE and NRO accounts (both savings and current accounts) through its mobile app YONO. This service is designed for new customers, providing a hassle-free process for account opening and management.
    • The Indian Army has recently inducted 600 self-neutralizing anti-tank mines known as "Vibhav". These mines are designed and manufactured indigenously in collaboration with the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
    • The Women’s Reservation Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed in the Lok Sabha after being in consideration for 27 long years. This historic bill ensures a 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
    • Windergy India 2023 Summit is set to commence in Chennai from October 4. This event is a part of the successful Indo-Danish Energy partnership.The summit will focus on the evolution of the wind energy sector, including advanced generation technology and local manufacturing of key components such as gearboxes and generator blades
    • The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has given permission to conduct the Truenat test to diagnose Nipah in Kerala. The Truenat test is a chip-based, point-of-care, rapid molecular test for diagnosing various diseases
    • The words “socialist” and “secular” were indeed missing from the Preamble in the copies of the Constitution handed out to MPs. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed concern over this and called it a 'serious matter
  • Economy:
    • Akasa Air, the Mumbai-based budget airline, has indeed received approval from the government to operate on international routes. This marks a significant milestone in Akasa’s growth strategy.
  • World:
    • 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised the issue of Kashmir in his address. He called for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Kashmir through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan.
    • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a delay of five years in imposing a proposed ban on petrol and diesel cars to 2035. This is part of a shift in strategy towards achieving the country’s Net Zero climate action targets

    • Mohammed Siraj has indeed reclaimed the top spot among ODI bowlers. He achieved this feat following his magnificent spell with figures of 6/21 in the recently played Asia Cup Final 2023 against Sri Lanka.
    • Hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain will be the flag-bearers of the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Hangzhou on September 23.
  • Obituaries:
    • N. Neela, the younger of the Sikkil Sisters, celebrated and senior flautists in Carnatic music, passed away on September 17. She was 85.Neela was decorated with several awards including Padma Shri, Sangita Kalanidhi given by The Music Academy and Sangeet Natak Akademi award.
    • Gita Mehta, the renowned author and documentary filmmaker, passed away at the age of 80123. She was the elder sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.Alongside her literary endeavors, Gita Mehta also ventured into documentary filmmaking.
  • Important Days:
    • World Water Monitoring Day is an international educational program that aims to raise people’s awareness and commitment to water conservation around the world. This day is celebrated every year on September 18.The theme for World Water Monitoring Day 2023 is "Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis".
    • The International Week of Deaf People 2023 is an annual event promoted by the World Federation of the Deaf. It is observed from 18th to 24th September. The theme for this year is "A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!".
  • Appointments:
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-appointment of Sashidhar Jagdishan as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDFC Bank. The re-appointment will be effective from October 27, 2023, to October 26, 2026.
    • Srinivasan K. Swamy, the Executive Chairman of R.K. Swamy Hansa Group, has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the term 2023-2024.
