Current Context: OIML stands for International Organization of Legal Metrology, which is an intergovernmental organization that sets standards for measuring and weighing instruments. OIML certificates are internationally accepted for selling these instruments in the global market.
India Becomes 13th Country to Issue OIML Certificate
  • India has become the 13th country in the world that can issue OIML certificates, joining an exclusive group of nations such as Australia, Switzerland, China, Germany, UK, Japan, and others.
  • This means that domestic manufacturers can now get their products tested in India and export them without incurring additional testing fees. This will create revenue and employment opportunities for India, as well as influence OIML’s policies and strategy.
  • India’s Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh announced this achievement on Thursday, September 14, 2023.
  • He said that a lab in Ahmedabad will do the testing for certification and there is a plan to start similar labs in other cities. He also said that the Ministry will have a dedicated cell for issuing the certificates.
