Arindam Bagchi has been appointed as India's Permanent Representative to the UN

Current Context: Arindam Bagchi, who was an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva. 

  • He was due to take up an ambassadorial posting earlier following his promotion but was asked to stay on as spokesperson in view of the G20 Summit.
  • He will replace Indra Mani Pandey, who has been appointed as the Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • He is an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1995 batch. He has a degree in management from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
