    • Claudia Goldin, a professor at Harvard University, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2023. She was awarded for her pioneering research that has significantly advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes.
    • The Ministry of Culture organized a curtain raiser and logo launch event for the inaugural India Art Architecture Design Biennale (IAADB 2023) at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi.
    • The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH) is the first museum in the Americas dedicated to preserving and promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution. The museum is located at 12379 Riceville School Rd, Houston, TX, 77031.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an external Working Group on Expected Credit Loss (ECL) based Framework for Provisioning by Banks. The ECL approach to provisioning is a paradigm shift from the current incurred loss-based provisioning regime.
    • The Chennai-based company KCP Ltd has delivered an integrated air drop test - crew module structure to ISRO for the Gaganyaan mission. The first module, made of aluminium and weighing 3,120 kgs, will be used to demonstrate the technology readiness for the human space flight programme.
    • The European Union has indeed approved the world’s first green bond standards. After years of debates and discussions, the European Green Bond Regulation 1, introducing the European Green Bond Standard (EU-GBS) was adopted on 5 October 2023 by the European Parliament.
    • The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) is being held in Kochi from 10th to 13th October 2023. The event is hosted by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and organized by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), New Delhi.The theme of the congress is 'Transformation of agri-food systems for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs)'.
    • The Indian Navy has indeed launched a '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism’. This new system is a transformative initiative that aims to address the limitations of the existing assessment process by incorporating feedback from peers and subordinates.
    • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully performed a Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre (TCM) on the Aditya-L1 spacecraft on October 6. The spacecraft is healthy and on its way to the Sun-Earth L1 point.
    • The Dakar Declaration on Climate Change 2023 was issued by the Ministers of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) in preparation for the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
    • Kerala’s first 3D-printed building, a 380 sq ft, one-room summer house named AMAZE-28, was set for a formal inauguration on October 10. This building is located on the Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra (Kesnik) campus at PTP Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram.
    • According to a report, the number of people who die from stroke worldwide is estimated to increase by 50% by 2050 to 9.7 million deaths per year. This surge in stroke deaths is primarily expected to affect low- and middle-income countries.
    • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a verification of all madrasas across the state. This decision came in light of allegations of ill-treatment, sexual harassment, and poor health conditions of students in a madrasa in Nainital.
  • Economy:
    • The Israel-Hamas conflict could potentially spur oil prices beyond India’s comfort zone. While Israel and Gaza are not significant oil producers, markets have been jolted by fears that the conflict could lead to wider regional instability
  • World:
    • Sri Lanka is set to take over as Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The Council of Ministers meeting in Colombo on October 11, 2023, will see the participation of sixteen Ministers, including the Foreign Ministers of Bangladesh, India, Iran, Mauritius, Malaysia and South Africa
    • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Reliance Foundation have indeed signed an agreement to promote Olympic values through sport among children in India.The aim is to positively impact the 250 million school-going children of India, reaching out to the remotest villages and regions of India, giving them options for a more disciplined, healthier, fitter, and more wholesome lifestyle.

    • World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9. The day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. The event was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo.The theme for World Post Day 2023 is ‘Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future’.
