  • National:
    • The Indian Space Conclave 2023 was held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Delhi from October 9 to 11, 2023. The conclave was organized by the Indian Space Association (ISpA) and co-hosted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), an autonomous agency in the Department of Space (DOS).

    • Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated new facilities at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and launched the new logo of Tele-MANAS on World Mental Health Day, 2023.
    • The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully test-fired an extended-range version of the BrahMos air-launched missile. This test showcased India’s expanding military capabilities. The missile was fired from a Sukhoi fighter jet.
    • U.K. and Tamil Nadu are indeed collaborating on a smart technology project for sustainable water, waste, and resource management. This initiative is titled ‘Smart district administration using IoT technologies for better quality of life’.
    • The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram welcomed its first-ever ship, Zhen Hua 15. The ship began its journey from China at the end of August. It was scheduled to dock at Vizhinjam on October 4, but got delayed due to bad weather conditions along its route.
    • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in India has directed YouTube to put disclaimers on channels that are likely to be spreading ‘fake’ news. This move is an attempt to crack down on online “misinformation” ahead of the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
    • The latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) shows that the share of women in regular wage work has declined sharply to 15.9% in 2022-23, from 21.9% in the pre-pandemic period of 2018-19.
    • The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal released a “Compendium of PM GatiShakti” in New Delhi. This was done to mark the completion of two years of PM GatiShakti.
    • The Green Credit Program (GCP) was notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 13th October, 2023. The GCP is an innovative market-based mechanism designed to incentivize voluntary environmental actions across diverse sectors by various stakeholders like individuals, communities, private sector industries, and companies.

  • Obituary:
    • Dr. Manohar Singh Gill, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, passed away at the age of 86. He served as the Chief Election Commissioner between December 1996 and June 2001.
    • Veteran journalist K S Sachidananda Murthy, who had served as the former Delhi Resident Editor of The Week magazine and Malayala Manorama daily, passed away at the age of 68.
    • Karthyayani Amma passed away at her residence in Cheppad village in the coastal Alappuzha district of Kerala on October 10, 2023. At the age of 96, she topped the state literacy mission’s flagship adult literacy programme. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar.
