Global Innovation Index 2023

Current Context: The Global Innovation Index (GII) is a leading reference for measuring an economy’s innovation ecosystem performance. It is published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other partners.

• The GII 2023 edition was launched on September 27, 2023, and it reveals the ranking of the most innovative economies in the world among 132 economies.
• It also identifies the top 100 science and technology innovation clusters in the world. The theme of this year’s GII is “Innovation in the face of uncertainty”.
• India has retained its 40th spot, which is a remarkable improvement from its 81st position in 2015.
• The GII is a useful tool for policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders to assess the innovation performance of their economies and regions, and to identify their strengths and weaknesses.
• According to the GII 2023, Switzerland is the most innovative economy in the world for the 13th year in a row, followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
