Current Context: The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently signed a contract with an Indian manufacturer for the procurement of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) at 82 IAF locations.

  • The IAF has been working on upgrading its fleet of its Russian-origin Su-30 MKI combat aircraft with indigenous advanced radars and weapon systems.
  • The AWS procurement is part of the IAF’s efforts to achieve self-reliance and modernization in the defence sector.
  • The IAF is also planning to equip its LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jet with the indigenous Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array radar and the Angad electronic warfare suite.
