WHO and WADA Signs MoU to Collaborate on Clean, Drug-free Sport

Current Context: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on clean, drug-free sport. It recognizes the importance of keeping sport clean and fair for the health and well-being of individuals and societies everywhere.

  • The MoU, signed in Geneva, Switzerland by WADA President, Witold Bańka, and WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and which will run until October 1, 2027, aims to bolster efforts towards the prevention of substance abuse and emerging drugs, and the promotion of clean sport.
  • Prevention and assessment of health risks associated with psychoactive substance use and related disorders, with a focus on doping compounds and substance use among athletes.
  • Awareness raising and advocacy for clean sport and substance misuse prevention worldwide.Raising awareness through education initiatives with the support of goodwill ambassadors and influencers to drive positive change.
  • The MoU also aligns with both organizations’ common objective towards ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all people, which is based on the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • The agreement reflects the commitment of both WHO and WADA to work closely with the sport sector to encourage increased physical activity globally in order to promote healthier lives for all.
