  • It’s a day to acknowledge the countless efforts of several individuals, organizations, and countries in the battle against polio.
  • Polio, a debilitating and highly infectious disease that has existed since ancient times, can cause paralysis or weakness in arms or legs.
  • The poliovirus can live in an infected person’s throat and intestines and can be contracted by food and water in unhygienic conditions.
  • On this day, we remember that by virtue of vaccination and collective action, we can fight this disease.
  • As of January 13, 2023, India has completed 12 polio-free years, which is considered a remarkable achievement; the last polio case in India was detected in 2011.
