  • National:
    • According to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), when a subscriber reaches the age of Superannuation/attaining 60 years of age, they will have to use at least 40% of the accumulated pension corpus to purchase an annuity that would provide a regular monthly income. This implies that up to 60% of the pension fund can be withdrawn at the time of retirement.

    • Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries, launched the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ ‘Annual Capacity Building Plan (ACBP)’ for 2023-24.
    • The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has proposed the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023. This bill seeks to replace the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act of 1995 and other policy guidelines currently governing the broadcasting sector in India.
    • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has approved the “Digital Advertisement Policy, 2023”. This policy is a significant step in empowering the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), which is the advertising wing of the Government of India, to conduct campaigns in the Digital Media Space.
    • The Chief Justice of India, Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud, inaugurated the ‘Mitti Cafe’ within the Supreme Court premises on November 10, 2023.
  • Banking:
    • India's import cover increased to 10.2 months in June 2023 from 9.6 months in March 2023 due to a rise in forex reserves. India's foreign exchange reserves cover of imports (on balance of payments basis) increased to 10.2 months as at June-end 2023 from 9.6 months at end-March 2023.
    • The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India posted a net profit of Rs.17,469 crore for H1 FY24, marking the insurer’s highest ever half-yearly profit. This significant profit was largely due to the transfer of Rs.13,768 crore, which was an accretion on the available solvency margin from the non-participating policyholders’ fund to the shareholders’ account
  • International:
    • The United Kingdom has announced its plan to add India to its list of safe states.The inclusion of India in the safe states list implies that the UK government considers the country to be generally safe, stable, and free from widespread human rights abuses.
    • A new island has emerged near Japan’s Ogasawara island chain after an undersea volcano erupted in October 2023. The undersea volcano, off the southern coast of Iwo Jima, which Japan calls Ioto, started its latest series of eruptions on Oct. 21.
  • Sports:
    • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to 'government interference’. The suspension came into effect immediately after the Sri Lankan government sacked the entire cricket board on allegations of corruption and appointed a new interim committee.
  • Appointments:
    • Sunil Narine, the West Indies all-rounder, announced his retirement from international cricket on November 5, 2023. He confirmed that he will no longer represent West Indies in international cricket while adding that he would continue to play the shorter formats of the game in franchise-based leagues across the world.
