Current Context: Heeralal Samariya has been appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner of India. He was sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu on November 6, 2023 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

• He is the first Dalit to hold this post.
  
• He is a former IAS officer and has served as the Labour and Employment Secretary.
• He was earlier an Information Commissioner of the CIC since November 7, 2020.
• He will head the transparency panel that deals with the Right to Information Act.
