J&K Police Becomes 1st in India to Use GPS Tracker Anklets for Terror-Accused on Bail
  • This is the first time such a device is being used in India.
  • The GPS tracker anklet is a wearable device affixed around the ankle of the person to be monitored and tracks their movement.
  • This technology is already being used in Western countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • The first person to wear this anklet tracker was Ghulam Mohammed Bhat, an operative linked to Hizbul Mujahideen, who is accused in a 2007 terror financing case.
  • The use of these devices aims to prevent accused persons from jumping bail.
  • This initiative by the J&K Police could help decongest prisons to a large extent.
