Current Context: The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is a joint venture between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

  • The mission aims to make global measurements of the causes and consequences of land surface changes.
  • It will significantly advance our understanding of the earth’s dynamics, natural processes, and climate change impacts.
  • The NISAR mission will provide a dynamic view of forests and wetlands, helping researchers explore how changes in Earth’s forest and wetland ecosystems are affecting the global carbon cycle and influencing climate change.
  • It will also add to our understanding of our planet’s hard outer layer, called its crust.
  • The much-anticipated launch of the NISAR Mission is expected to take place in early 2024. The recent meeting between Dr. Laurie Leshin, Director of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of NASA, and ISRO Chief Dr.S.Somanath discussed the readiness of the NISAR mission.
