Current Context: The Saffron of Kishtwar district, along with other regions of Kashmir, has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indications Registry on 21st November 2023.

  • A GI tag is a name or mark given to products that have unique features and special qualities associated with a specific region.
  • The GI tag will help Kashmiri saffron to gain more prominence and recognition in the domestic and global markets.
  • It will also protect the product from being imitated or adulterated by other producers. Kashmiri saffron is renowned for its longer and thicker stigmas, natural deep-red colour, high aroma, bitter flavour, and medicinal properties.
  • It is the only saffron in the world grown at an altitude of 1,600 m to 1,800 m above sea level.
