Current Context: The Gujarat government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

  • The MoU was signed on December 7, 2023 at Gandhinagar in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju.
  • The MoU aims to develop 11 airports in the state under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
  • These airports are located in Bhavnagar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Surat, Porbandar, Mehsana, Mandvi, Amreli, Kandla, Keshod and Deesa, which fall under un-served-underserved category.
  • The MoU also covers the development of four water aerodromes at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, Sardar Sarovar dam a Kevadia colony, Shetrunjay dam at Palitana and Dharoi dama in Mahesana under RCS Udan-3 and .
  • The MoU is expected to boost regional air connectivity and tourism in Gujarat by providing easy access to various destinations within and outside the state.
