Nadia Calviño of Spain took over as 1st Woman President of European Investment Bank

Current Context: Nadia Calviño, the former first vice-president of the government of Spain and minister of economy, trade and enterprise, took over as the president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) on 1st January 2024.

• She replaced Werner Hoyer and became the first woman and the first Spaniard to lead the institution.
• This is indeed a significant milestone. Calviño has held various positions at the European Commission in the past, including deputy director general with special responsibility for financial services, deputy director general for competition, and later director general in charge of the budget.
• Her appointment is seen as a strong message of rigour and stability sent to the European authorities.
