  • The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.
  • This event is sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India and other organizations.
  • The theme for the 17th PBD was "Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”.
  • It provides a platform for the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of India for mutually beneficial activities.
  • The event is held every other year in a selected city in India.
  • The 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held from 8–10 January 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
