PM Modi Launches Development Projects Worth Over 13,000 Crore in Varanasi

Current Context: On 23rd February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched several development projects in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency.

• These projects, worth over Rs 13,000 crore, aim to boost the city’s infrastructure, protect its cultural legacy, enhance the living standards of locals, and promote tourism.
• Some of the key initiatives include:
• Road Projects: The inauguration and foundation stone laying of multiple road projects, including the four-laning of the Ghargra-Bridge-Varanasi section of National Highway 233 and the Sultanpur-Varanasi section of National Highway.
• Industrial Development: The inauguration of an HPCL LPG bottling plant in Sewapuri, Banas Kashi Sankul milk processing unit at UPSIDA Agro Park Karkhiyaon, and various infrastructure work at the UPSIDA Agro Park.
• Textiles Sector: The foundation stone of a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Varanasi to strengthen the education and training infrastructure of the sector.
• Health Infrastructure: The foundation stone of a new medical college and the National Centre of Ageing at Banaras Hindu University.
• Cultural Preservation: The ‘Namami Gange’ project aims to clean and revitalise the Ganges River while maintaining its environmental sustainability. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, inaugurated in December 2021, has significantly increased visitor numbers to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
