Current Context: The Ministry of Defence signed two contracts with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) totaling 8,733 crore rupees on 13th March 2024.

  • Here are the details:
    • HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft: A contract for the procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft from HAL was signed. The HTT-40 is a turbo prop aircraft designed for training newly-inducted pilots. The aircraft is fully aerobatic with a tandem seat, an air-conditioned cockpit, modern avionics, hot re-fueling, running change over, and zero-zero ejection seats. The procurement also includes associated equipment and training aids, including simulators.
    • Advanced Light Helicopters: Another contract was signed for the acquisition of 34 Advanced Light Helicopters. These helicopters are designed to carry out search and rescue, troop transportation, internal cargo, and casualty evacuation operations.
  • These contracts are part of the government’s efforts to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence.
  • The procurement will not only meet the future requirements of the Indian Armed Forces but also has the potential to provide direct and indirect employment to thousands of people spread over more than 100 MSMEs.
