  • Banking:
    • The Indian government has granted a one-year extension to RBI Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar, effective from May 3, 2024. Sankar, who has been associated with the Reserve Bank of India since 1990, has held various positions within the central bank.
  • Committees:
    • The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) is comprised of representatives from all UN member countries and aims to develop a legally binding international agreement to combat plastic pollution, especially its harm to the marine environment.  This Committee is chaired by Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra Velasquez from Peru.
  • Important Days:
    • The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, observed on April 24, underscores the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and multilateral solutions in achieving a peaceful and just world. No country can tackle today’s challenges in isolation, and collaboration is essential.
    • International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated every year on the last Thursday of April. This year, it falls on April 25, 2024. The main goal behind observing International Girls in ICT Day is to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the ICT sector. The theme for this year’s Girls in ICT Day is ‘Leadership’.
    • On April 26, the world celebrates World Intellectual Property Day. This day, established by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in 2000, aims to raise awareness about intellectual property (IP) rights and their role in encouraging innovation and creativity. The theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2024 is “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity.”
  • Appointments:
    • Hardayal Prasad has been appointed as the new Managing Director and CEO of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited (SIFL). With over 36 years of experience, Prasad brings a wealth of knowledge to his role. Previously, he served as the Managing Director & CEO of SBI Cards & Payment Services Ltd and PNB Housing Finance Ltd.
    • Usain Bolt, the legendary Jamaican sprinter and eight-time Olympic gold medalist, has been appointed as the official ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This prestigious cricket tournament will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA in June.
    • Narsingh Yadav, a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist and an Arjuna awardee, has been elected as the Chairman of the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) Athletes Commission. This significant appointment was part of a mandate by the sport’s governing body, the United World Wrestling (UWW).
  • Awards & Honours:
    • Two Indian student teams have brought laurels to the country by winning prestigious awards at the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). The KIET Group of Institutions from Delhi-NCR bagged the “Crash and Burn” award, while the Kanakia International School from Mumbai received the “Rookie of the Year” award.
    • Randeep Hooda has been honored with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award. This recognition celebrates his significant contributions to Indian cinema, particularly for his recent film “Swatantraveer Savarkar.” The award acknowledges his remarkable achievements in the Indian film industry.
  • Obituaries:
    • Sudhir Kakar, a pioneering Indian psychoanalyst, author, and cultural critic, passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 85. His work significantly bridged the gap between Eastern and Western thought, particularly in the field of psychoanalysis.
