GI Tags Awarded to 19 Goods from Assam; 2 from Tripura, 15 from UP and 4 from Meghalaya

Current Context: On March 31, 2024, 15 products from Uttar Pradesh were added to the list of Geographical Indication (GI) certified goods, making it the state with the highest number of GI-tagged products in India.

  • Following this, on April 1, 2024, 19 traditional products and crafts from Assam were granted the GI tag. On March 30, 2024, two emblematic products of Tripura, the revered Tripura Sundari Peda and the traditional attire Rignai, received the prestigious GI certification.
  • Additionally, in March 2024, four products from Meghalaya, including Meghalaya Garo Textile, Lyrnai Pottery, Meghalaya Chubitchi, and Lakadang Turmeric, were added to the GI registry.
  • These GI tags recognize the unique qualities and geographical origin of these products and help in preserving cultural heritage, fostering sustainable livelihoods, and promoting economic growth in the region.
