Current Context: On April 16, 2024, the Central Government of India took a significant step towards addressing the concerns and rights of the queer community by forming a six-member panel.

  • This decision was made following the Supreme Court’s directive on October 17, 2023.
  • The panel, chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, includes secretaries from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and Law Ministry.
  • The committee’s purpose is to examine various issues affecting the queer community.
  • It will look into measures that can be taken to ensure that members of the LGBTQ+ community do not face any threat of violence, harassment, or coercion.
  • It will also examine what measures can be taken to ensure queer persons are not subjected to involuntary medical treatments and surgeries.
