• National:
• The WHO has released the first global guidelines to prevent infections from catheter use. These guidelines aim to address the risk of germs entering the bloodstream due to poor catheter practices. They include good practice statements and recommendations for health workers on education, hygiene, and catheter management.

• International:
• On May 13, the Ibu volcano on Indonesia’s Halmahera island erupted, spewing ash several kilometers into the sky. The eruption lasted for about five minutes. The alert level was raised to the second-highest level, and residents and tourists were advised to stay away from the area within a 5-kilometer radius of the crater.
• The United Nations General Assembly declared May 25 as World Football Day on May 7, 2024. This day marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament with global representation. The resolution recognizes the global impact of football and the role of FIFA and other football organizations.
• Economy:
• India’s retail inflation eased to an 11-month low of 4.83% in April 2024, slightly above the RBI’s target but within its tolerance range. This decrease was partly due to lower fuel prices. However, food prices remained high. The data was released on May 13, 2024.
• Mous:
• The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Hindalco Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on May 9, 2024, in New Delhi. The MoU is for the manufacturing and supply of indigenous marine-grade aluminium to Indian public and private shipyards for the construction of ships. The ICG fleet currently operates 67 ships with aluminium hulls, designed for operations in shallow waters.
• The Bank of India (BOI), one of the leading public sector banks, has indeed signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Coast Guard. This agreement was formalized to introduce the “BOI Rakshak Salary/Pension Savings Scheme,” a Defence service Salary Package with top-tier features. The signing ceremony took place on May 9, 2024, at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi.
• Science & Technology:
• ISRO Chief S. Somanath launched the Zero Emission initiative of SFO Technologies. This initiative aligns with the UN’s goal of achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035 and zero emissions by 2040. SFO Technologies has been closely associated with ISRO, contributing to various programs.
• The NASA-JAXA XRISM Mission discovered iron fingerprints in the galaxy NGC 4151. The mission’s Resolve instrument studied the supermassive black hole at the center of this galaxy and captured a detailed spectrum revealing the presence of iron.
• Sports:
• Indian gymnast Srishti Khandagale won the silver medal at the 6th Asian Trampoline Gymnastics Championship held in Hong Kong, China, from May 11-12, 2024. Despite strong competition, she secured her place on the podium.
• Aman Sehrawat, an Indian male wrestler, qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the men’s 57kg freestyle category. He achieved this milestone at the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul on May 11, 2024.
• Japan’s men’s national hockey team, Samurai Japan, won its first Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy on May 11, 2024, in Ipoh, Malaysia. They defeated Pakistan 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
• World number-one Magnus Carlsen made an extraordinary comeback at the 2024 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland on May 12, 2024. • Defence:
• The Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), a part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has developed a liquid Ramjet fuel for advanced air-breathing engines. This fuel was successfully tested at the Ramjet Testbed at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) on May 8, 2024.

• World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2024 will be celebrated on May 11 and October 12. The theme for WMBD 2024 is “Protect Insects, Protect Birds”, emphasizing the importance of insects as essential food sources for many migratory bird species.
• Awards & Honours:
• Cmde Hemant Khatri, the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), was honored with the prestigious ‘PSU Samarpan Award’ by Gov Connect on May 14th, 2024. The award ceremony took place in New Delhi. This significant accolade recognizes the substantial contributions of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to India’s progress.
• Obituaries:
• Roger Corman, the legendary Hollywood producer and director known as the “King of the B-movies”, has passed away at the age of 98. He made over 400 movies and helped launch the careers of many acclaimed directors and actors.
• Varugeese Koshy, Kerala’s first International Master and a renowned chess trainer, passed away at the age of 66. He achieved the International Master norm in 1993 and trained many Indian players, including P Harikrishna and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta.
