Current Context: Indian chess player Vaishali Rameshbabu was officially bestowed the title of Grandmaster (GM) by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) on May 1, 2024.

  • This significant achievement took place during the IV El Llobregat Open in Spain, making her the 84th Grandmaster from India and the 42nd woman globally to achieve this title.
  • Notably, she and her brother, GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, are the first brother-sister GM combination in chess history.
  • Vaishali’s chess career includes victories in the Girls’ World Youth Chess Championship for Under-12s in 2012 and Under-14s in 2015, and she received the Woman International Master (WIM) title in 2016 and became a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in 2018.
  • Her achievement is a proud moment for Indian chess.
