  • National:
    • Universal Sompo launched a campaign titled ‘Insure Today For a Safe Tomorrow’ on June 3, 2024. The campaign aims to promote insurance awareness and includes initiatives such as free vehicle checkups, ensuring uninsured vehicles, and educating the public about property insurance.

    • TotalEnergies signed LNG supply contracts with Indian Oil Corporation and Korea South-East Power on June 4, 2024. The deal with IOC is for 10 years starting 2026, supplying up to 800,000 metric tons/year. The deal with Korea South-East Power is for 5 years starting 2027, supplying around 500,000 metric tons/year.
    • The Nakshatra Sabha was a two-day astro-tourism event held in Mussoorie on 1-2 June. Organized by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and Starscapes, the event included activities like astrophotography, star gazing, solar observation, and expert talks.
    • The Nagi and Nakti bird sanctuaries in Bihar have been added to the ‘Ramsar Sites’, a list of wetlands of international importance. This brings the total number of such sites in India to 82. The Nakti sanctuary hosts over 150 species of fauna and flora, including a large congregation of red-crested pochard.
  • International:
    • The Biopharmaceutical Alliance, launched on June 6, 2024, is a collaboration between India, South Korea, US, Japan, and the EU. The alliance aims to strengthen the biopharmaceutical supply chain and ensure resilience post-pandemic.
    • Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has set a record by becoming the first person to spend 1,000 days in space. This milestone was achieved over five journeys to the International Space Station since 2008. If his mission ends as planned on Sept. 23, 2024, he will have spent a total of 1,110 days in orbit.
  • Banking:
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved Zurich Insurance Company’s acquisition of a 70% stake in Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Company for ₹5,560 crore. The approval was received on June 4, 2024.
    • The board of directors of Punjab National Bank (PNB) has approved the dilution of a 10% stake in Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company. This will be done through an initial public offering (IPO). PNB currently holds a 23% stake in the insurer.
  • Economy:
    • DBS Bank, headquartered in Singapore, announced on May 31, 2024, that it has retained its forecast for India’s GDP growth at 7% for FY24-25. This projection is based on factors such as global growth stability, investments in public and household capex, rural recovery, a normal monsoon, and improved trade composition.
  • Apps & Portals:
    • On World Environment Day, June 5, 2024, the Secretary of MeitY, Shri S Krishnan, inaugurated the Indigenous Air Quality Monitoring System (AQ-AIMS) and launched the Air-Pravah App. The AQ-AIMS is a cost-effective solution for monitoring various air parameters, and the Air-Pravah App provides real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) monitoring.
  • Important Days:
    • National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year. However, please note that in 2024, the first Friday of June falls on the 7th of June. This day celebrates donuts and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women who served donuts to soldiers during WWI.
    • The UN Russian Language Day is observed annually on June 6 to promote the study and appreciation of the Russian language. The day also honors the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin, a notable Russian writer. The event, supported by the UN General Assembly and UNESCO.
    • World Pest Day 2024 was observed on June 6th with the theme “Global Solutions, Local Impact: Mapping Success in Pest Management”. The Global Pest Management Coalition (GPMC) led the celebration, promoting best practices and raising awareness about the industry’s impact on public health and safety.
  • Appointments:
    • Shri Kamal Kishore Soan, a senior IAS officer, took over the additional charge of Director General of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on May 31, 2024. He is also serving as an Additional Secretary and Director General, Labour Welfare in the Ministry of Labour & Employment.
  • Awards & Honours:
    • The All India Tennis Association (AITA) presented the Dilip Bose Lifetime Achievement Award to coach Nar Singh and the first lifetime achievement award for women coaches to Rohini Lokhande. The awards were presented during the 11th National coaches workshop at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana in Pune on June 7 and 8, 2024.
