Current Context: The National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES) was approved by the Union Cabinet in India in 2024.

  • This initiative aims to strengthen the country's forensic infrastructure with a financial outlay of Rs. 2254.43 crore spread over five years (2024-25 to 2028-29).
  • The scheme focuses on several key areas:
    • Establishing new campuses of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) across India. This will increase the availability of trained forensic professionals.
    • Setting up more Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) to expand capacity for forensic analysis.
    • Enhancing the infrastructure of the existing NFSU campus in Delhi. 
    • This will improve the university's ability to provide education and training in forensic science.
    • The NFIES is a significant step towards improving the criminal justice system in India. By strengthening forensic capabilities, the scheme aims to ensure timely and scientific examination of evidence, leading to faster investigations and better conviction rates.
