Current Context: A High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved several disaster mitigation and capacity building projects for various states on 25th July 2024.

  • Key Points:
    • Urban Flood Management: Six project proposals for Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Maharashtra were approved for urban flood management in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune at a total cost of Rs. 2514.36 crore.
    • Integrated Solutions for Flood Management: A previous approval for a similar project in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was worth Rs. 561.29 crore.
    • Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services: Projects for Assam, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu were approved with a total outlay of Rs. 810.64 crore.
    • GLOF Risk Mitigation: A project for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh was approved to address the risks posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
    • Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme: This scheme aims to train young volunteers in disaster preparedness and response, with an outlay of Rs. 470.50 crore.
