Current Context: The Uttar Pradesh government has launched two schemes, Upvan Yojna and Heritage Tree Adoption Scheme, to increase green cover in the state on 19th July 2024.

  • Upvan Yojna
    • Aim: To enhance green cover across the state, from urban areas to rural villages.
    • Implementation: The government is providing saplings and cuttings for plantation in parks, along roadsides, and other public spaces.
    • Expected Outcomes: Increased green cover, improved groundwater levels, better environmental conditions, and mitigation of climate change impacts.
    • Budget: An annual allocation of Rs 70 crore has been earmarked for this scheme.
  • Heritage Tree Adoption Scheme
    • Aim: To preserve the state's rich botanical heritage.
    • Focus: Protection and care of 948 heritage trees, aged over 100 years, belonging to 28 different species.
    • Scope: These heritage trees are distributed across all 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
